Indigenous Art & Culture
Welcome to the Dreaming... Prior to white settlement, Australia’s indigenous
people’s were the Aborigines, with a culture dating back tens of thousands of
years, spanning the entire continent, a multitude of tribes and Aboriginal
nations. For both visitors and those living on this land, there is still much to
be discovered and learnt from a culture that has survived within the harsh and
magnificent continent of Australia.

Aboriginal Symbols
The dotted motifs of much of today's Aboriginal modern design work has become
the trademark of the contemporary Aboriginal Art movement. Its iconic status
developed from a culture stretching back into the history of an ancient land,
evolving and weaving into desert dreamtime stories.

Deadly Artists
This website is dedicated to Australia's Aboriginal Indigenous Artists. Deadly
Artists will be an ongoing project to provide a source from which individuals,
galleries and artists can source or submit information about Australia’s
Indigenous Aboriginal artists. As a reference source, we aim to make this a
useful free resource for all.

Trephina Sultan
Born in Alice Springs in Central Australia. Visitors to the Alice Springs area
have been purchasing Trephina’s paintings over many years. The paintings
reflect her family’s culture, upbringing as a young child, and stories
as told by her Elders. As well as the ‘dot style’ synonymous with Aboriginal art,
Trephina more recent works include abstract pieces such as her ‘Tjanpi Kampanyi’ (Burning
Grass). With many more wonderful pieces, including bush honey, desert
oak, bush onion grass, rain, Kapi Nguru (From Water), Walpangku Wangka
Katipai (Voices in the Wind), Intanga (Grass Seed), we continue to look forward
to something new from her.

Audrey Rubuntja
Born in 1942 in the
old Alice Springs hospital to Wildred and Lucy Swift of Hermannsburg, Audrey has been painting for about 30 years. Her paintings
tell stories of family, bush tucker gathering and dreamtime stories. As she
explains, ‘My
grandchildren love to watch me paint as I tell them stories and explain to them
the meaning of the different symbols used. In this modern days we have adapted
to the use of acrylic paint to illustrate the same stories that were originally
told with drawings done by hand on bare ground’.
